Do you have to worry about snow on expressways in the Kanto area?

  • Q1
I saw vehicles working but what are they doing?
Spraying antifreeze agents or snow removal work

It snows even on the Tomei & Shin-Tomei expresways!

You may think the Tomei & Shin-Tomei Expressways are free from snow even in the middle of winter. Don't!
Actually, heavy snow can fall even in regions that do not usually get much snow. In the Gotenba Area in Shizuoka the weather changes rapidly and the amount of snow is often heavy. Gotenba Interchange (altitude 454m) is the highest point on the Tomei Expressway, and Gotenba Junction (altitude 405) is the highest point on the Shin-Tomei Expressway. In addition to this height, the Gotenba Area in winter has heavy snow due to the southern low-pressure zone off Shikoku.

    Always fit winter tires!

It is not widely known that even the Tomei and Shin-Tomei have heavy snow, causing lot of vehicles to be seen without winter tires or chains and drivers not used to winter road driving.
Between Oi-Matsuda IC and Numazu IC on the Tomei Expressway, and between Gotenba JCT and Nagaizumi Numazu IC on the Shin-Tomei Expressway, there are cases where major congestion and road closures occur due to vehicles stuck in snow causing other vehicles to back up.
Please prepare for snow on roads when you consider including these areas in your driving route.

Check points that need attention prior to travelling on winter roads!

Points that need attention within the NEXCO Central Nippon area are introduced in "Map". Please make use of it for safe winter road driving.
