TakayamaThe center of Takayama city has been preserved as a castle and merchant town since the Edo period and it is often referred to as the "Small Kyoto in Hida" due to its traditional landscape. It is wonderful to wander around the city, looking at original Japanese small articles and products, going to hot springs, or even just for drive there. It is called "Hida Takayama" in many guidebooks and is visited by many tourists. It was introduced as "A town that still retains the old Japanese feel," and also received three stars in the tourism section of "Voyager Pratique Japon," a guide book by French Michelin.

Gassho-zukuri villages of Shirakawa-goShirakawa-go refers to the Shirakawa villages in Northwestern Gifu Prefecture. Several Gassho-zukuri, houses with steep, thatched roofs, miraculously remain in the Shirakawa villages. These houses were highly acclaimed by German architect Bruno Julius Florian Taut who visited the area in 1935 and introduced these structures to the world through his literary works.
In 1995, Ogimachi in Shirakawa village as well as Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama, Toyama Prefecture were recognized as UNESCO world heritage sites.
