Yamanashi Prefecture is surrounded by tall mountains exceeding 2000 meters above sea level: Mount Fuji lies to the south, the Southern Japanese Alps (Akaishi Mountain Range) to the west, Yatsugatake to the north and the Okuchichibu Mountain Region to the east. Although sericulture (the raising of silkworms) flourished here in the past, today's farmers have found the highland climate ideal for cultivating grapes, peaches and cherries, which are grown here in abundance. Wines produced here are known as Koshu wine. One type of hands-on tour that has gained in popularity recently is a trip to the orchards and vineyards to experience fruit harvesting.
