Politics, Economy and Culture – the Center of Japan
Since 400 years ago when it was known as Edo, Tokyo has flourished as the center of Japan's government, and with this, Tokyo has become the nation's economic and cultural center. Famous tourist locations include Kaminari-mon Gate at Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, Ginza with its high-fashion shops, the Kabuki-za or kabuki theater, and the Tsukiji Outer Market, a commercial district next to the famous Tsukiji fish market. The Imperial Palace, built where Edo Castle once stood, is in Tokyo, and its perimeter is a popular place for joggers. At the end of the year, Ameya-yokocho (Ameyoko for short) can be found filled with shoppers snapping up goods at bargain prices.
