- Shirakawa-go and Takayama – an Historical Feeling
Gifu is a landlocked prefecture that contains the Hida Region and features many destinations that hold an historical atmosphere including Takayama—called the “Little Kyoto of Hida”—and Shirakawa-go, a World Heritage Site. Takayama has been preserved as a castle town and merchant town since the Edo Period, and the snowy winter scenery here is popular with sightseers. In 1995, Shirakawa-go was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its many traditional gassho-style structures with steeply pitched, thatched roofs give it the appearance of a hamlet from Edo times, making it popular among tourists.
