- Lake Biwa – Japan's Largest Lake
Shiga Prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, which boasts the largest surface area and volume of any lake in the country. Around the lake include many attractions such as Hikone Castle and Omi Shrine. In the Sakamoto area of Otsu is Enryaku-ji Temple, the headquarters of the Tendai Buddhist sect. The temple grounds encompass Mount Hiei (848 meters in elevation), which is registered as a World Heritage Site. From mid-October to mid-November, the temple grounds are filled with the beautiful autumn colors of maples and cherry blossom trees, making this a particularly popular destination in fall.
