- Mountain Sightseeing on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
Part of the Hokuriku Region on the Sea of Japan, Toyama Prefecture is known as one of the truly heavy snow areas, but its Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a popular attraction. With a difference in altitude of 1,975 meters between the lowest and highest points, the Alpine Route may be traveled in a variety of ways, including the Tateyama Ropeway (which provides spectacular views of the Tateyama mountain chain), the trolley bus that runs through a tunnel, and walking across the Kurobe Dam, which is the highest in Japan. The Takayama Region is also home to the rock ptarmigan.
