- A Castle Town with Traditional Crafts and Culture
Located in the Hokuriku Region, Ishikawa Prefecture has thriving traditional crafts such as working gold leaf, wajima-nuri lacquer ware and Kutani porcelain. Flourishing in the Edo Period as the castle town of the Kaga feudal domain, Kanazawa is a popular destination for sight-seeing, retaining its old town feel with samurai mansions and home to one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, Kenroku-en, whose name means Garden of Six Attributes. Over ten thousand square meters in size, Kenroku-en is a perfect example of the chisen kaiyu style of gardens of the Edo Period, characterized by a central pond and rambling paths for strolling. Kenroku-en is a popular place to visit even in winter when covered with snow.
