- Ise, Japan's Oldest Shrine, and Traditional Fishing Techniques
Mie Prefecture has industrial districts such as Yokkaichi, and many famous tourist spots dot the prefecture, among them the historical Ise Grand Shrine. Visited by more than seven million people each year, Ise Grand Shrine comprises the Inner Shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, believed to be the ancestor of the imperial family, and the Outer Shrine, which is dedicated to the guardian goddess Toyouke, who ensures people have housing, food and clothing. Another well known place to visit is Okage Yokocho, where you can find a recreation of an Edo Period temple town. Visit the Toba area where tours have recently been added to see the female divers, known as ama, dive for fish in the sea using no oxygen tanks or other equipment.
