How to handle emergencies like an accident or breakdown

  1. Turn on your hazard lights to signal to the cars following you. After stopping, signal further with warning flares or triangle reflectors. It is imperative to turn on the hazard lights to signal the occurrence of a breakdown or accident in order to prevent following cars from rear-ending you.
In the event of a breakdown, slowly decelerate without using the emergency brake, and when possible, stop on the shoulder or emergency parking area. After stopping your car, notify oncoming cars of the accident or breakdown with warning flares or triangle reflectors.
  2. The driver and passengers should carefully get out of the car and quickly take shelter in a safe place, like outside of the guard rail. It is dangerous to wait in or near the car as there is danger of being rear-ended by oncoming cars. Please evacuate to a safe place, such as outside the guard rail, quickly.
There is a high incidence of fatal accidents when people are hit by oncoming traffic while waiting near the car or on the shoulder after a breakdown or accident.
  3. Please notify someone of the accident or breakdown using a call box! In the event of an accident, please dial 110 or use a call box to notify authorities. In the event of a breakdown please use a call box or dial # 9910 to notify authorities.
Call boxes are installed every 1 km (200 m in tunnels). For details about call boxes click here
