Eihei-ji

Eihei-ji of Sotoshu Daihonzan, built by the Zen priest Dogen, is a temple for monks who have renounced the world. This temp was called "The first temple of Sotoshu" by the emperor during the Muromachi period and has been opened for Zen training throughout history. In the vast 330,000 square meters campus, there are over 70 wards, like Shichidougaran, composed of a main training area, gates, Butsuden, Hattou (the lecture hall), Soudou (the training room for priests), Daikuin (kitchen), bathing room, Tousu (bathroom), and many more, all of which are still standing quietly, surrounded by trees which are over 600 years old. Zen training is still solemnly performed in the manner which Dogen founded 750 years ago, by the over 150 monks.
