In Lake Hamana, there are about 700 kinds of fish and shellfish living and is renown for having some of the best fishing in Japan. Eels, nori, oysters and soft-shell turtles are incredibly prosperous throughout Lake Hamana. Cultivated eels, especially, are very famous in the Lake Hamana area and there are many local foods using eel like eel rice bowls, fried eel bones and Unagi pie. There also many resorts around Lake Hamana, and marine sports like boating and yachting are popular, as well as a large number of sightseeing facilities such as hot springs.
